I Am Legend

I just finished reading Richard Matheson’s classic horror novel, I Am Legend, and was blown away. It’s such a tight, masterfully crafted novel that it reads just as well today as in the fifties. The vision of protagonist Robert Neville’s transformation from a lone survivor in a world where a plague has turned everybody else into vampires into the bogeyman of a terrible new world is one of the most haunting things I have ever read. Matheson’s prose is crisp and clear, Neville’s personality is drawn with a razor-sharp pen, and the ending is so uncompromising that it’s hard to imagine what the forthcoming Will Smith adaptation is going to do with it. Highly recommended.
